Demonstration for Klamath SalmonFish Need Water!Klamath, CaliforniaFrom the Associated Press Don Thompson, 07/19/03: "Yurok Indians who hold the Klamath River sacred to their way of life are now openly opposing government water policies they say favor upstream farmers and threaten endangered salmon. "It's the latest round in the fight over the Klamath Basin, which has become a national symbol for how hard it can be to allocate scarce water resources among farmers, tribes and fishermen. After staying relatively silent, Indians are mobilizing to pressure the government to divert more water downstream. "Several hundred tribal members and supporters from northern coastal communities took to the streets Saturday to show their opposition. They even at times halted traffic as they lined Highway 101, waving signs and chanting 'Fish need water.'" Images from 2003 demonstration |
