Born in 1919, Archie's first language was Yurok. As a young child he was forced to attend boarding school where he was forbidden to speak his language. He went on to attend Del Norte high school, where he became an all-star athelete. After graduation he went to trade school, and on to the U.S. Navy. Later, he worked in the woods until a near-fatal injury forced his early retirement. Soon thereafter, he was widowed and left raise his eight children. He has always worked to keep family together. We are proud of Grandpa Archie for working hard, and for showing his children and grandchildren how to laugh, fish, pray, and for teaching Yurok language. (Read more about Indian boarding schools.)
